What is Development Education?
Why is Development Education so Important?

What is Development Education?

Development Education aims to

  • Enable people to understand the links between their own lives and those of people throughout the world.
  • Increase understanding of the economic, social, political and environmental forces which shape all of our lives.
  • Develop the skills, attitudes and values which enable people to work together to bring about change and take control of their own lives.
  • Work towards a more just world in which power and resources are equally shared by all.

Development Education investigates the similarities and the differences in the way we live

For example, children across the world go to school each day.
How do they travel to school?
What do they learn?
Do they have school dinners, packed lunch or go home to eat?
What do they eat?
What games do they play in the playground?
Why are so many children unable to go to school?
Another example might be: In the UK we consume approximately 7kg of chocolate every year.
Where does cocoa come from?
What conditions do cocoa farmers work in?
Does the price we pay for chocolate affect the farmers in other countries?
If a family bar of chocolate costs £1.00, why does the cocoa farmer only receive about 6p?
What is fair trade?
