A Good Practice Guide to Whole School Linking

By Lisa Young (2005)

The value of school linking has long been recognised by perhaps a small fraternity of the education community. It has now moved in to the spotlight and is widely promoted to the state sector especially as a means of engaging our youngsters in their preparation to become global citizens. School linking is considered to be an advanced form of global education activity by those in the field through which much learning can take place. This is a practical guide that will enable you to independently establish a link in your school or help you find an organisation who will support and work with you. It is also a guide to best practice that will encourage you to consider the complex and potentially mutually empowering relationship you build with your partner school and how to sustain it.

This is not a linking promotional booklet, it is written to add to and further the body literature that exists surrounding linking. The emphasis is very much on a style of linking that puts the relationship between partners at the centre, built on continued dialogue and reflective practice. We have many devices that we regularly use to receive information about the unknown 'other', such as books, film, and the Internet. This is a one way street. You are now considering beginning a relationship and becoming involved with real people in real places to understand the 'other' and ourselves. This brings responsibilities and obligations for both parties and is a significant undertaking.
