Global Citizenship - What is it?

Citizenship became part of the National Curriculum in September 2000 in primary schools and September 2002 in secondary schools. It provides a unique opportunity for pupils to become active and informed citizens not only in their own school and local community but also in making choices which have an impact on people in other parts of the world.

Young people are growing up in an increasingly global context. There is a global dimension to our lives whether it relates to the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the pupils in our schools or the people or faiths in our communities. Some of the key concepts of global citizenship are:

- Democracy
- Sustainable development
- Social Justice
- Interdependence and globalisation
- Conflict and conflict resolution
- Human rights and responsibilities

Global citizenship is not only concerned about issues but also values and attitudes. It encourages young people to question their values and explore the values of others within their own community and in different parts of the world.

The Citizenship curriculum requires pupils to develop knowledge and understanding, skills of enquiry and communication and become involved in participation and responsible action at a level appropriate to age and conceptual development. These requirements can be met in many different ways across the curriculum and can ultimately become embedded in teaching methodology and the school ethos.
